I'd like to lay the charge at the feet of technology; Doyle and The Strand hit the sweet spot of mass newspaper circulation and became Ur-figures of the serial mystery. Also, the crystalline explication of the mysteries granted absolute access to any writer, whereas Roddenberry and Rowling resorted to non-sequitur kludges from technology and magic, respectively.
